Applying Our Research

ARC's Research Department is completing work on two projects that expand on our research released last year on Millennials ("Don't Call Them Post-Racial") and Food Justice ("Color of Food"). We will publish our findings in May and June, with free public webinars accompanying the report releases.

Our first project centers on young people (ages 18 – 30): what motivates them, what they consider to be the greatest barriers to a progressive vision, and attitudes about the electoral system. Most importantly, we explore the extent to which progressive young people believe that race and racism should be explicitly addressed in the struggle against income inequality. Findings will stem from focus groups conducted in five cities across the county with young people engaged in progressive organizations, Occupy protests, and other movements.

The second project evaluates the barriers and opportunities toward greater collaboration between “good food” and “good jobs” movements. Senior Research Associate Yvonne Liu is presenting ARC’s food justice work at the University of Pacific and UC Berkeley, while completing interviews with leaders in these two movements through mid-May. If you would like to suggest leaders to be interviewed, contact Yvonne at [email protected].

Most people want to eliminate racism, but are not sure what to do or how to do it. In this webinar, you’ll learn how to:

  • Counteract unconscious bias
  • Identify everyday opportunities for advancing racial justice
  • Move from institutional racism to institutionalizing racial equity

Presenter Terry Keleher, Director of ARC’s Racial Justice Leadership Action Network will present useful concepts, tools and examples of positive steps you can take to advance equitable change. The webinar will be held on Thursday, April 19 at 1 pm ET/ 10 am PT. Register here.

Colorlines.com Spotlight

Colorlines.com is thrilled to announce the launch of a joint investigative project with The Nation to provide critical coverage of voter suppression efforts in the 2012 election season. The project will consist of ongoing investigative journalism by Colorlines investigative reporter Brentin Mock, as well as the aggregation of voter protection news and tips from citizen journalists in key districts.

The Brennan Center for Justice has found that Voter ID laws and other suppression efforts could result in as many as five million eligible voters encountering difficulties this Election Day. “Voter Protection 2012” will focus on the racial impact and dimensions of Voter ID laws, barriers faced by voter registration organizations, and efforts to police the vote.

Reporter Brentin Mock says, "People have marched, bled, and died for the right to vote. As the first African American elected president faces re-election, we will be unpacking all the racial hostilities behind efforts to make voting more difficult. The right-wing has a clear agenda to limit the electoral power of communities of color, and they plan to do it through voter misinformation, as they have historically. When this happens, people of color are intimidated from exercising their constitutionally protected voting rights.”

The Nation and Colorlines.com will co-publish reports from the “Voter Protection 2012” project and feature expanded media coverage of voter suppression efforts through regular appearances on radio, TV, online, and print media, and a post-election presentation at ARC’s Facing Race National Conference in Baltimore, November 15-17, 2012.

President's Message

Colorlines reporter Seth Freed Wessler was awarded the prestigious Hillman Prize for his work on "Shattered Families," which documented the extent to which immigrant parents are being permanently separated from their children by immigration enforcement and child welfare practices.

Other Hillman winners this year include Ta-Nehisi Coates of The Atlantic; Heather Vogell, Alan Judd, and John Perry of The Atlanta Journal Constitution; Sarah Stillman of The New Yorker; Katie Falkenberg of Los Angeles Times; Yoav Potash of The Oprah Winfrey Network; and Frank Bardacke, author of Trampling Out the Vintage.

In addition, for the second year in a row, Colorlines.com is a Webby Honoree as one of the web’s best political blogs! And our article A History of Georgia’s 1%: Why You Must Face Race to Occupy Atlanta by Kung Li took third place for “Best Editorial Commentary” at the Independent Press Awards.

It is possible to produce game-changing journalism on a shoestring budget, but I get very excited when I think of the great work that still awaits. To expand our coverage in this critical election year, we'll be adding two new reporting fellows to cover key issues — voting rights and reproductive rights (read more about this in the Colorlines section).

We need your help to ensure that we can continue to offer the best coverage of the deepest racial issues confronting all of our communities. We'd be nowhere without our readers, who shape, share, and comment on our content. With your donation today, we can remain innovative, free and accessible.

Please let us know you value Colorlines.com and want to help support our award-winning racial justice journalism by donating $10, $20, or $30 today. Or become a Colorlines Sustainer with a monthly donation.

Big thanks for all your support.
