Applying Our Research

Register today for our free informational webinar on “Shattered Families," to be held tomorrow, Thursday November 10, at 3pmET/12noonPT.

More than 5,000 children whose parents have been either detained or deported are languishing in foster care right now - facing threat of permanent separation from their families - and ARC projects another 15,000 children in the next five years if immigration enforcement continues at this rate.

In this webinar, ARC will review findings of "Shattered Families," our groundbreaking report which offers the first national data available on the perilous intersection of immigration enforcement and the child welfare system. We will also present key policy and practice recommendations for Department of Homeland Security, various levels of legislature, state child welfare departments, immigration and juvenile dependency attorneys and courts on how we can better protect families from separation and reunify families in a timely way.

Be part of the solution - register now and join us online tomorrow!

Network News

ARC is inviting submissions for workshop proposals for our 2012 Facing Race National Conference, scheduled for November 15-17, 2012 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Facing Race has become a major hub for leading racial justice activists, thinkers, writers and artists to meet, learn together, explore innovative strategies and celebrate successes. We expect this conference to be our largest ever, drawing over 1,000 attendees.

Approximately 40 workshops will be selected and featured at Facing Race 2012. Due to the limited number of workshops and growing interest and attendance, we expect the workshop selection process to be very competitive.

Submit your proposal online by December 1, 2011. Final workshop selections will be made by ARC staff, board and conference advisors. Workshop proposals may be accepted as is, with conditions, or declined. Deadline to respond to requested revisions: December 10, 2011. First round of workshop selection begins on January 6, 2012.

Please email workshop submissions with subject heading “Workshop Proposal for Facing Race 2012” to [email protected]. For additional information, contact Gina Acebo at (510) 653-3415 x 4919.

ARC’s new Racial Justice Webinar Series has been well received and widely attended. This series is designed to help a range of audiences navigate the complex and contested terrain of racism with greater clarity, unity and strategy.

Our next webinar, “Changing the Conversation on Race: Promoting Actions and Solutions,” will be held on Thursday, November 17 at 1pmET/10amPT. In a climate where discourse on racism is discouraged, how can we engage others constructively and productively? The conversation on race won’t change unless we change it. And talk remains talk unless we move it towards action. Presenters include Colorlines.com Editorial Director, Kai Wright and ARC’s Leadership Action Network Director, Terry Keleher.

If you missed our previous webinar, “Challenging Racism Systematically,” a recording is available for purchase. This webinar takes a systematic approach to addressing racism and focuses on its causes and what changes we can advance. This is our core racial justice webinar and future ARC webinars build on the concepts introduced here.

ARC Racial Justice Webinars are $35 each. By registering for both webinars (live and recorded) you will receive a $10 savings, for a total of just $60. Enrollment is limited, so please register today to reserve your place.

            {{VCard.FIRSTNAME}},

The holiday decorations are starting to appear, so we’re moving into that time when people open their checkbooks or web browsers to make annual donations. This year, I hope that the Applied Research Center is on your list.

If you’ve ever experienced an “aha!” while attending an ARC training, shared the Daily Love on Facebook, or appreciated our attention to often-ignored issues, please drop what you can into our bucket. Whether you give $5 or $500, your gift will have a very real effect on our work. It will let us move faster than any foundation ever could, a critical nimbleness in these fast-changing political times. It will allow us not just to report on families lost at the intersection of foster care and immigration enforcement, but to ensure that leaders of those systems don’t ignore this heartbreaking trend.

Finally, your gift allows us to highlight the effective solutions that you, our community, are pursuing with such brilliant courage. In short, more money fuels more mission. And ARC's mission to popularize racial justice and prepare people to fight for it is what keeps us coming to work every morning. Please support ARC's work with a donation today.
