Race Forward Congratulates Senior Fellow Eric K. Ward as First U.S. Recipient of Renowned Civil Courage Prize

Race Forward proudly congratulates Eric K. Ward on receiving the 21st annual Civil Courage Prize. This year marks the first time in the award’s history that an American has won the prize. Since 2000, The Train Foundation has presented the award to individuals or groups who stand up against some of the world’s most repressive authoritarian regimes, organized crime syndicates, and violent religious and ethnic extremists.

“Eric is more than deserving of this distinguished award and we are honored to have him on the Race Forward team,'' said Glenn Harris, president of Race Forward and publisher of Colorlines. “Eric is ardently committed to this work. As a Senior Fellow with Race Forward, he has championed Race Forward’s pro-democracy frame and co-strategized movement building strategies – including navigating the white nationalist backlash, and advancing racial equity across sectors.”

During his nearly 30 years of experience as a national expert on the relationship between hate violence and preserving democratic institutions, governance, and inclusive societies, Eric founded and led a community project designed to expose and counter hate groups and respond to bigoted violence; and, as a staff member at Northwest Coalition Against Malicious Harassment, he worked with government leaders, civil rights campaigners, businesses leaders, and law enforcement officials to establish more than 120 task forces focused on human rights and anti-violence in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.

Eric is currently also a Senior Fellow with Southern Poverty Law Center, Chair of the Proteus Fund, and Executive Director of Western States Center, where he helped to launch the Inclusive Democracy Culture Lab, which works with musicians to create new narratives about anti-bigotry and inclusion.

The Civil Courage Prize will be presented during a virtual ceremony on Friday, October 29,  12:30pm ET. Registration to attend is here.
